I visited this site hoping to connect with someone who just needed a good ear and a positive buddy. I started writing to this inmate back in August 2021, and for the first couple of months, I thought we were hitting it off. I mistakenly believed he was looking to turn his life around; he was calling me every day, and I thought he just needed someone to talk to. So, I decided to lend a hand. He never directly asked for anything, but I ended up sending him cash and even set up an account for him to call me. However, after the last money order I sent, he went silent for about a month. That’s when I realized he had been dishonest about everything. He did eventually call, but by then, I was done with his nonsense. It became clear he was just after my time and more cash. I told him exactly what I thought of him, and he sent me a photo that looked like it was taken a decade ago—who knows what he really looks like now? Just a heads up: be cautious with some of these inmates. They can spin a lot of tales and be quite manipulative, which is unfair to those who are genuine. Seriously, don’t send money and stay alert because some of them are just scammers.

My stepson is currently incarcerated in a California prison and requested that I check out this website. Although it had a search option based on sex, race, and location that showed inmates by their last names, after clicking 15 times, it kept looping back to the Cs and then to the Bs. It kept switching to Hispanic instead of African American, and ultimately directed me to the state website to find him. It's completely useless.

These days, there are plenty of sites that encourage you to connect with inmates, and this one definitely isn’t the worst out there... Just keep in mind to watch your words and remember that you could end up getting scammed, whether it’s for cash or just for kicks.

This site serves as the main electronic connection for these individuals to the outside world. Sure, you can send an inmate a traditional letter, and they'll receive it, but this method is faster and costs about the same.

Absolutely, these folks all need funds. Many are victims of a harsh legal system. Most of them are quite impoverished and had to depend on the 'Public Defender' since they or their families couldn't afford proper legal representation.

If your aim is to reach out and provide some comfort in a system that takes advantage of them, then keep this in mind. Some might request money or 'stamps' to respond, so be ready for that. A handful have managed to earn enough from their work over time to purchase a permitted tablet for writing and music, but it takes ages since their pay is less than what minimum wage was back in the 1960s.

If you're here looking for romance or some risqué photos or chats, you’re in the wrong place.

Your intention should be to connect with them, offering a bit of normalcy in their lives while helping another human being. Think of them like soldiers from past conflicts who eagerly awaited messages from loved ones.

Remember, no matter how tough your day was, theirs was likely much worse.

I’ve written to several women just as pen pals, and yes, I did buy stamps and phone time for some. It wasn’t pricey, and the phone time let the women chat with their kids and families. One even managed to reunite with her children, another found a boyfriend and got hitched while incarcerated. A third won’t ever get out, but she was a lovely person to converse with.

So do reach out and say hi, but keep in mind that eventually, you’ll need to assist them financially with stamps or phone credits.
